Thyroid Disease Almost Always Has a Root Cause
We've seen a huge rise in thyroid disorders — hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, hyperthyroidism, and everything in between. The question I keep coming back to is: what's actually driving this?
Why "Just Take This Pill" Misses the Point
Most people's experience with thyroid dysfunction looks the same: you see a provider, answer a few questions, get some blood work, and hear some version of "based on these labs, take this pill for the rest of your life." That's one way to handle it — but it skips right past the more important question: why did this happen in the first place, and can it actually be healed?
The Thyroid Is a Reactive Organ
Part of the problem is how mainstream medicine tests for thyroid issues. We've long had the ability to measure thyroid hormones directly, but far less ability — or willingness — to look at the rest of the hormonal system alongside them. It's genuinely difficult to get a provider to order labs that look beyond the thyroid itself.
But in my experience, the thyroid is usually reacting to something else going on in the body. It's rarely the actual cause of the fatigue, cold sensitivity, or other symptoms that brought someone in to begin with.
Looking at the Whole Endocrine System
My approach to thyroid health starts with the bigger picture — why did the thyroid have to run too hot, or carry too much load, until it burned out as a gland? Very often, the real answer is sitting somewhere else entirely: the adrenals, the ovaries, the testes, or another part of the endocrine system. We have to go looking for it, and we have to think about hormonal health as one connected system, not a single gland in isolation.
